You have a point however...

: Adrian, you are confirming my point. The question is NOT how I manage my computer...If one has Real Player and has not edited the type of files or uninstall the Real Download, then our autoresponder message is victimized. I will not bet that people will edit the Real file types or uninstall the Real Download to accomodate my AR message. If many had the Real Player G2 as default before updating to Real Player 8.0, then our "AR message" has to live with the consequences. My background sound is off! Can't understand how Real can get away with this blatant intrusion!?

: Michel

...Real do offer the option to not have the player as the default sound device so I think they can't really be held to blame. I do agree with you that most people will not read the questions in front of them and just keep clicking on the next button until the install is completed.

I have to say that from a marketing standpoint Real have been rather clever because I notice that there is no way of deselecting it as the default player once it has been installed.

So what do we do now? Even I am foxed on this one. Perhaps we can do without background sound, or at least leave it in and if someone sees Real Player pop up they can always minimize it while it plays or get annoyed enough by its intrusiveness to uninstall it.
