importance of maintaining healthy cartilage in our joints and how painful symptoms can
result if it is not maintained. He discusses how cartilage is normally present at the ends
of the bones in our joints and that it acts as a "cushion" helping us stay
comfortable when we walk, move our arms, fingers etc. It also acts like a sponge holding
fluid ensuring softness and joint lubrication. All this results in healthy joint function
and mobility.

JOINT
FUNCTION AND MOBILITY
Healthy cartilage is important in all joints throughout the body. In the joints such as
the knees, elbows, and fingers, cartilage serves as the hard yet flexible spongy tissue
which is capable of compressive stiffness, and holding in critical lubricating fluids in
our joints. Joint cartilage is in a constant state of growth, repair, and enzyme-induced
breakdown.
The cartilage in our joints is made up of four basic substances:
collagen, proteoglycans, special cells called chondrocytes and water. Collagen is a very
important structural protein and a major component of cartilage. At Life Plus, we have
been big believers of supplementing with our high quality collagen hydrolysate product
AminoLyze™ to support both collagen maintenance and lean body mass. After all, collagen
is a protein that forms a big part of the structure of all of our connective tissues of
which cartilage is one. Collagen maintenance requires certain amino acids, which are
supplied by AminoLyze.
Proteoglycans are compounds in our cartilage that are large molecules
consisting of a protein and sugar component that hold water. This results in good
lubrication, mobility and freedom of movement. If adequate "water-holding"
tissue (proteoglycans) is not present, our cartilage loses its ability to absorb shock. It
becomes more susceptible to cracking, breaking and just disappearing. Of course, this
leads to lack of joint mobility and discomfort.
The chondrocytes are miniature cells that produce new collagen and
proteoglycans to maintain what is needed. Then, as the collagen and proteoglycans age,
these miniature cells produce enzymes that break the collagen and proteoglycans down to
make room for the newly formed, more healthy and youthful collagen and proteoglycans.
GLUCOSAMINE
Glucosamine is contained throughout the body, and is a component of an important group of
macro-molecules called mucopolysaccharides. They may be present in synovial (joint) fluid.
Maintenance of these macro-molecules is essential to normal healthy joint function and
mobility. In some circumstances, however, oxidation by free radicals may interfere with
and reduce otherwise normal levels of glucosamine. Hence it makes sense to supplement with
quality antioxidants such as Proanthenols™ Bio-Complex when trying to insure maintenance
healthy levels of Glucosamine.
CHONDROITIN
Chondroitin is another mucopolysaccharide consisting of large negatively charged branches
which tend to attract and hold water. This facilitates lubrication in the joints resulting
in freedom of movement. Research has demonstrated that a combination of Glucosamine and
Chondroitin can help in the maintenance of normal healthy joint function and mobility
through nutritional support of cartilage connective tissue.
